ANTIQUE FRENCH BACCARAT AMETHYST PURPLE GLASS BOWL GILT BRONZE ORMOLU. Wonderful and fine amethyst fluted cut crystal bowl.

(Crystal is in perfect condition, not chips or cracks). With gilt ormolu mounts with a mask and scroll handles. Measurements 8.75 high by 8.75 wide. Recently a question came up about baccarat crystal being hallmarked and i wanted to clarify that the crystal in this piece has NO hallmark for baccarat. In all my years collecting crystal and bronze mounted pieces such as this one none have ever had any type of marking in the crystal but if they are of high french quality they are usually regarded or classified as baccarat.

I have rarely come across antique crystal pieces that would have an etched Baccarat marking and if i did then usually they have been flower vase or urn type of items with a flat base and usually not with bronze mounts. There are numerous items of comparable quality and vintage listed as baccarat on the web and not bearing hallmarks.

However you can expect to see hallmarks on modern tabletop wares by baccarat. There are many variables and gray areas in this field, since all the different french trades by law had to be specialized like bronziers, porcelain maker, case goods ext. There were many retailers (i believe the french term is "minesieur") who would order items from different manufacturers and it was the retailer who in many cases put together a combination of mediums to create an item. The perfect common example that comes to mind is the french inkwell that you may see with a coromandel wood base mounted on gilt bronze and then samson porcelain inkstands and possibly some type of figurines and or porcelain flower mounted branches. In many instances the individual items where not hallmarked as they were produced and then assembled by another. Thus likely bronze mounted crystal wares as well. This is just the opinion and research of someone who has been collecting fine french antiques for almost 40 years. Please look at the photos carefully as they are part of the description.
