A George III period wine goblet dating around 1765. It is in the same shape as an ogee bowl wine glass of the period, simply scaled up a lot.
These goblets are far less common than the small capacity wine glasses as during this period to have so much drink in one glass would have been very opulent. The stem is a double series with a spiral gauze and pair of spiral tapes. The glass is of English production and made from lead glass.
The foot in conical and the pontil scar has been left rough snapped which is as you would expect for this period. Perhaps the most interesting feature is the etching which is of Jacobite significance with the fleeing jaybird and the flower and bud.
These are symbolic of the Jacobite cause and although this would not be described as a true'Jacobite' glass it certainly has some interest in this field. The glass also has good tooling marks where the glassblower has handled the piece during production. The ogee bowl is pretty much as large a capacity as we use today, making these glasses suitable for use should you wish. Careful use will not be to the detriment of the item as long as it is carefully cleaned afterwards using just mild detergent and warm water - nothing too hot and no dishwashers! Good order with minor wear and a few scratches to the top side of the foot. Wear to the underside of the foot through use and a small glass blip to the foot edge where the glassblower caught the item with his tooling during production.
